Stephen Mansfield began his career in newspaper photography in 1973 with his first ever publication in the Barrhead Pictorial. The picture was of a fire in Gladstone Avenue and he received the handsome cheque of 'One Pound'!
Undeterred by this meagre payment he went on to submit a picture to the Barrhead News and was invited to meet the editor who at that time was Alice Craig. She was in need of a regular photographer and with her encouragement and support Stephen soon decided to abandon his apprenticeship at an architects office and work full time as a freelance.
He went on to contribute to other publications in the group including the SouthSide News, the Mercury and the Renfrewshire Gazette and other periodicals such as the Govan
Press, Flourish and the Gryffe Weekly News.
He was subsequently offered daily assignments with The Scotsman and the newly launched Scotland on Sunday before accepting a staff position with the Scotsman in Glasgow.
Now retired, he is in the process of scanning the negatives from his vast archive of historic photographs and publishing them on the web.
Images are added on a daily basis so visitors are encouraged to frequent this site.
